Storm naming has become quite a thing around the world as climate change makes big weather events headline news and this Autumn threatens to be no different.
The Met Office has just announced the new ‘Storm Year’ is upon us.
We had a record 12 named storms hit in the UK last year with Storms Hemp, Isha, Jocelyn and even Kathleen wreaking their own particular havoc on us all.
Late August also saw the visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Tonga – one of many Pacific islands at risk from rising sea levels due to global warming.
As reported by Katy Watson for the BBC, Mr Guterres said in a speech “The reason is clear: greenhouse gases – overwhelmingly generated by burning fossil fuels – are cooking our planet.”
Earlier this year CNN reported on an unwanted milestone telling us that ‘The world marks a year above critical climate limit’ having seen global temperatures rise by over 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrialisation levels.
The maximum target of 1.5 degrees was set by most of the world’s nations way back in 2015.

Turning the tide
So it is with a sense of urgency that people are looking to do their bit to literally try to turn the tide.
We noticed that EasyJet have announced a link up with a US Company to develop a ‘blended wing’ aircraft which would reduce energy consumption and be ‘hydrogen ready’ for the future.
Also, organisations like The Urban Transport Group have said around 15,000 buses operating in England’s major cities must become zero emissions by 2036, if city regions are to hit their ambitious net zero targets.
They have urged the Labour government to announce a phase-out date for diesel-powered buses plus boost support for the introduction of zero emission models across the country.
